Overview of the syllabus

1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

  1. General Studies Paper I (GS Paper I)
  • Current Events: National and international events of importance.
  • History: Ancient, medieval, and modern Indian history.
  • Geography: Physical, social, and economic geography of India and the world.
  • Polity: Indian polity and governance, including the Constitution, political system, and public administration.
  • Economics: Basic economic concepts, economic development, and Indian economy.
  • Environment and Ecology: Environmental ecology, biodiversity, and climate change.
  • Science and Technology: Developments in science and technology, IT, and space technology.
  1. General Studies Paper II (CSAT)
  • Comprehension: Reading comprehension passages and questions.
  • Logical Reasoning and Analytical Ability: Problem-solving, reasoning, and data interpretation.
  • Decision Making and Problem-Solving: Situational judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Basic Numeracy: Arithmetic, data interpretation, and numerical ability.

2. Main Examination (Mains)

  1. General Studies Paper II
  • Governance: Structure, functioning, and issues related to governance, constitutional framework, and institutions.
  • Polity: Indian political system, public administration, and judiciary.
  • Social Justice: Issues related to social justice, welfare programs, and policies.
  • International Relations: Bilateral, regional, and global issues involving India and the world.
  1. General Studies Paper III

  1. Optional Subjects (Two Papers)
  • Paper I & II: Candidates choose one optional subject from a list of subjects provided by UPSC. Each subject has its own syllabus and involves two papers.

3. Interview (Personality Test)
